As we all know, many of us – both in businesses and in the comfort of our own homes – are striving to reduce our carbon footprint and become more ecofriendly, to ensure that our quality of life and of course that of our children only gets better.
In our industry, a recent environmental standard has been introduced by the SIA (Stove Industry Alliance) ahead of a similar European environmental standard that isn’t coming into effect until 2022. The SIA’s Ecodesign Ready scheme has been put into place to ensure all new British wood burning stoves are more environmentally friendly than ever, as this will make sure stoves and fires are built to keep emissions extremely low.
HETAS will oversee the scheme, testing independently to check whether wood burners meet these high standards, and award each stove or fire with the Ecodesign Ready label, making them the most environmentally friendly stoves and fires on the market.
SIA conducted some research early last year, investigating the effectiveness of Ecodesign stoves, and found that there is a 90% reduction in particulate emissions from these stoves in comparison to an open fire and between 80-84% when comparing with an older stove. As more and more households turn to wood burning to heat their home, we are continuously working towards creating a greener future.
